Children’s Justice Act Grants

The Children’s Justice Act Grant Program provides funding to develop, establish and operate programs designed to improve the:
  1. Handling of child abuse cases, particularly cases of child sexual abuse and exploitation, to limit additional trauma to the child victim;
  2. Handling of cases of suspected child abuse or neglect-related fatalities;
  3. Investigation and prosecution of cases of child abuse, particularly child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Federal funds, approximately $350,000 annually, and staff time are allocated to support local coordination. This is accomplished by funding Children’s Justice Coordinators, who work at a county level to facilitate Interagency Councils (IACs) or Multidisciplinary Teams (MDTs).

IAC’s and MDT’s monitor and offer training on local Child Abuse Investigation and Prosecution Protocol, and conduct case reviews.

Children’s Justice Coordinators provide mandated reporter training and assist in coordinating training needs for professionals.

Local coordination efforts are often manifested in the form of child and family advocacy centers.
