The Division for Children promotes and advances the strength and well-being of Arizona's children and families. This is accomplished through the administration of federal grants and initiatives regarding child welfare and juvenile justice.
The Division administers federal funds from the U. S. Departments of Justice, Education and Health and Human Services, which includes the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Title II and Title V Grants, the Juvenile Accountability Block Grant, the Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant and the Children’s Justice Grant.
The Division also administers state funds collected by the department of transportation from the sale of child abuse prevention specialty plates. Monies are allocated to primary prevention programs that strengthen families and that increase awareness of child abuse prevention within Arizona.
A key collaborative effort is the Division’s involvement in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) federal grant – Project LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children’s Health). The goal of the grant is to promote wellness for children from birth to eight years of age using five evidenced-based programs that are school and community-based. The Health Program Administrator within the Division for Children serves as the principal liaison on this project so that statewide entities work together to accomplish the objectives of the grant.
The Division for Children provides staff support and leadership to the Arizona Juvenile Justice Commission, which oversees the duties set fourth in the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, the Children's Justice Act and the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act. |
