Governor Janet Napolitano created the Governor’s Mentoring Initiative by Executive Order in 2004. The goal of the initiative is to encourage state employees and other caring adults to become mentors to school-age youth in their communities. The Governor’s Mentoring Initiative coordinates activities during National Mentoring Month in January of each year to recruit new mentors, recognize mentors and to increase the awareness of the great need for mentors that exists throughout Arizona.
Why mentoring?
Young people in our state are in need of positive adult support in their lives. Volunteers in our communities can play a vital role encouraging Arizona’s youth to build a better Arizona. Currently less than 2% of Arizona’s one million school aged children are involved in a mentoring relationship. Becoming a mentor is fun and rewarding!
